Born of the elements - Ortak jewellery at Saswa
Inspired by the dramatic views and surrounding waters of the Orkney Islands, Ortak jewellery interprets the shapes and colour of nature.
Malcolm Gray, founder of Ortak jewellery, began to design in the late 60's, in Orkney's Kirkwall. The core of these beautiful pieces is the use of exacting and diligent skills
of the traditional silversmith. These techniques have been passed down over generations, and have been adapted to meet the needs of modern customers. Now working from a modern
manufacturing studio, the results are truly impressive.
With its home still firmly where its heart is, Ortak jewellery is still produced from its Orkney island home. This traditional process is based on a system that has been used for
centuries, and given modern production benefits. Initially, each piece is drawn out and designed by the designer, and the draught drawings are passed to the craftsman. The master
piece is hand crafted, and it is from this piece a mould is created to reproduce each detail perfectly.
This mould is used to create the wax replicas used in the next stage of the process. Each of these replicas are placed into steel flasks. An "investment powder" is then added.
In the 550?C heat of the furnace, the wax evaporates and the powder becomes a perfect shell with all the accuracy of the wax mould. The molten silver is poured into each flask, which
is dismantled when cool and the cast jewellery is unveiled.
The jewellery that is pulled from this casting process is crisp, and when the enamelled details are added, the look is complete. Dazzling colours and immaculate styling have made
Ortak popular all over the world. Order from Saswa today, and enjoy these breathtaking pieces of original, designer jewellery.
